ARTS 114: Introduction to 3-D Design
A fundamental course with an emphasis on means of construction, analysis of materials and structural examinations that support conceptual development of 3 dimensional art. Emphasis placed on characterizing the elements and principles of design and how they each integrate to form fully realized works of 3D art. Students will develop projects using a variety of materials and methods.
"Pattern and Balance"
For this assignment we were to create a decorative bas relief clay tile using polymer clay. It was to incorporate a type of balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial, or crystallographic). The tile was to include at least three distinct levels of depth.
For this assignment I chose my Translation Asymmetry Design sketch. My three different levels of depth can be seen in the doorway, the surrounding molding and the added greenery texture.
"Plane to Mass"
For this project I was to contrast curvilinear and rectilinear planes while integrating texture to create a three-dimensional robot out of cardboard, or posterboard. Even though the robot did not have to function in a practical sense it still needed to appear as if it could move and pick up items.
For this project I used cardboard and hot glue to construct and attach my robot. I used rectangular 3-D boxes while attaching the joints with layering of individual pieces. I used thin strips of cardboard to act tendons and ligaments. Overall, this project was fun but finding the proportional balance of making the robot stand on its own was a challenge. Throughout the process I learned a lot about what was more efficient and effective and how to create a neater looking presentation.
"Line and Balance"
This project required me to construct a wire sculpture of a human figure in action using asymmetrical balance.
This assignment utilized wire to create the entirety of the figure. I first created the wire figure and then began wrapping it. I found wrapping the wire was a lot harder than I anticipated and even though it took a lot of time I wish I could go back and make it appear a bit neater.
For this assignment I used the action of a volleyball player. Volleyball is a very mental game affected by internal and external circumstances. I personally felt a lot of pressure when playing so I wanted to incorporate the chaos which is why I wanted to wrap my figure with wire. I then went on to "contain" the chaos with the outside skeleton of the muscles that are normally seen. As an athlete you are expected to stay calm and collected in the most intense parts of the game even though on the inside you might be a wreck.
"Emphasis Through Contrast"
The purpose of project was to practice how to construct an armature, which was constructed using polymer clay. The project was to show an "area of emphasis" by contrasting the sizes of two distinct forms. This project was to be narrative in nature and also emphasize the importance of a Christian worldview. I chose to illustrate the story of David and Goliath from the Bible. This project was quite difficult for me in the sense that it had so much detail and the clay was difficult to work with in certain areas and difficult to depict certain features.
