FACS 140:
Space Planning and Codes

This course provides students with an understanding of the International Building Code and how it impacts the design of structures. Students also explore how human-centered space planning creates environments that are highly functional. Registration Restriction: Portfolio Review

Sketchbook #1

This space represents a “good space” as it meets all the basic needs of humans either by directly or through proximity. When considering physical factors such as the measurements of the human body and how it moves have been considered with the furniture chosen in the chair heights and design. The door frames also exemplify the considerations of physical factors. Physiological needs have been met as food and water are easily accessible in the JFL and fresh air is easily accessible from this area. This space provides shelter, clean air, and sunlight. This space also uses the proportions of treads and risers correctly meeting these factors. Another category of a good space is psychological factors which is broken down into five need groups: social, stabilizing, individual, self-expression, and enrichment. This space provides a wide range of options to meet the social needs as well as the individual needs. The types of workspaces vary from individual desks to group seating options seating up to four people. The needs of self-expression, enrichment, and stability are met by the way the space is used but the blank canvas that the room starts with using a variety of spaces to give students the freedom to use the space as the please free of fear and concern.

Sketchbook #2

This room uses the perimeter zoning of the room to place

the contents. Each grouping of furniture is aligned with

one another and is centered upon each of the windows.

Each of the furniture groups are placed functionally not interrupting the flow of the space and utilizing the space

well.

Sketchbook #3

This sketch was trying to focus on the topic of layering spaces. I choose this space because you can see multiple layers and different spaces.

Sketchbook #4

This sketch was supposed to depict the principle of spatial sequencing. This particular space is an informal sequencing as there is not any order. The sketch of the floor plan of the Terrace level of the Jerry Falwell Library accurately shows the informal sequencing and the flow of the space.

Sketchbook #5

This sketch is supposed to represent a focal point at the end of a path of travel. This can be done with artwork or a niche but on campus the freedom tower accurately depicts a focal point.

Sketchbook #6

For this sketch we were to find an arrangement o spaces or furnishing on campus that demonstrate sociofugal and sociopetal interaction. I chose this space in the Jerry Falwell Library that has small, individual work areas that discourage the interactions of others.

Sketchbook #7

For this assignment we were to find an area on campus that provides good areas of privacy. The study rooms in the Jerry Falwell Library provide privacy from other individuals in the library, they have only a limited capacity and a closable door to provide individuals or groups places to study privately. Although it is glass it is in a place that has less traffic than the rest of the library.
