FACS 113:
Introduction to 2D Design
In this course students get an introduction to visual thinking as well as the elements and principles of design. Concentration of the elements of design through production of artwork using a variety of materials and methods. Emphasis is placed on understanding the elements and principles of design and how they integrate to form fully realized works of art. Student explore composition and selection of subject matter.
Scale
In this project we were asked to select a fabric and render the fabric on the chairs you see below. We were to do this accurately rendered to scale which can be seen on the left and 2x enlarged on the chair to the right.

In this project the main objective was to demonstrate value change and balance. I used radial balance to arrange my origami in a circle. Within the circle the fans are made from an original geometric shape of rectangles. These are arranged in all different directions and there are a variety of different sizes. To balance the tints and shades of red included I used smaller sizes of fans for the shades of red and larger fans are used to display the tints. I faced many challenges within this project like ow to best fold them to create the look I envisioned as well as the overall arrangement ensuring that they were well balanced. Gluing the fans was also a challenge as the glue dried fast and keeping the form consistent was difficult. Overall, I learned a lot in problem solving to work efficiently to complete this project. Photoshop helped to pick tints and shades from the original hue of red chosen.
Color Assignment
Line & Shape,
Pattern & Texture
For this assignment, we were to create a collage of letters of the alphabet based on observations of the natural and/or built environment. The letters were to be thematic and to create the layout and arrangement of the photos photoshop was used.
When planning what I wanted to do for this project I knew I wanted to incorporate Lynchburg in some capacity. Although I was familiar with the area, I still wanted to explore and look at my environment in several different lights. I decided to go to downtown Lynchburg and more specifically Main Street. I took a group of friends, and we went on a hunt to find all these letters occurring naturally. It was so exciting to find new letters but so disappointing if they weren't exactly right such as I found a fire escape that would have been a perfect "Z", but it was inverted the wrong direction. This process made me look differently and more closely at my surroundings. It was challenging to keep up with the letters I had and didn't have yet but I found having duplicates of letters was always helpful in designing my project because it gave a variety to your choices and preferences. Lines, shape, pattern, and texture all went into this project. Certain letters were lines drawn while others were textured such as the sidewalk and its decorative detail. Shape also created a lot of letters such as my letter "D" is created by a sign in the shape of a D. The pattern within the bench created the letter B. In all these lines, shapes, patterns, and textures I was able to find the alphabet which wouldn't have been possible without those designs and details.

Rendering Project
For this assignment two renderings were to be created in two different color schemes. I chose to create a monochromatic and analogous color scheme. I choose textiles from numerous sources such as Ballard Designs and John Robshaw Textiles. I chose patterned textiles and velvet textiles to create an expensive luxurious bedroom designed within each color scheme. This project was the most challenging as it used many of the skills and knowledge that we acquired throughout the semester. Utilizing photoshop helped me to become more acquainted with the tools and uses that photoshop provides. For the analogous color scheme, I choose to use green, yellow green, yellow, and an orange yellow. The monochromatic displays a variety of shades and tints of blue.

Group Project #1
For this group assignment each group was instructed to design a pair of banners to promote the interior design program utilizing three principles of design.

First, our group search and selected advertising campaigns to draw inspiration from advertisements that successfully implemented the principles of design. We then sketched ideas using SketchUp and then utilized photoshop to arrange the banners.

Our principals used in these banners consisted of emphasis, balance, and unity. Asymmetrical balance is used in our banners by the arrangement of the dissimilar objects such as the multiple samples and the blueprint placed across from it. As well as the text "Interior Design" placed on opposite ends of each other on the banners. This created harmony and order in our asymmetric banners. The arrangements of the dissimilar objects and placements of text on opposite ends still achieve a visual equilibrium.

The use of emphasis can be seen by the black text "Interior Design." We made this a dark text to create a focal point and catch the audiences' eyes as they passed to show the main purpose of the banners, which is the Interior Design program here at Liberty University. This can also be linked by the scale of the text being very large outweighing the other surrounding images and details.

We used unity throughout our banners in several ways. We used different tints and shades of green all throughout our project. We chose samples that also represented our overall color scheme. By using this color scheme, we created unity and harmony between the separate banners. In addition, we used a consistent text font and color. The floorplan incorporated on the upper part of both the banners allows unity as it connects the two. We also have a curved line that flows in a line of continuation from on banner to the other.

These principles all come together to create visually appealing, aesthetic banners to convey our overall message of informing students about the interior design program and decorating the new lab.

Implied Line Assignment

For this mini project we were to illustrate the image of the Eames molded plastic chair, which can be seen on the left, only using implied lines. I used a combination of hatches and dotes in order to create the shadows and highlights.

I first lightly sketched the basic shapes of the chair. Then taking various sizes of black markers I added lines, hatches, and dots.

Our first project in Introduction to 2D Design was a woven self-portrait. I was instructed to use a black and white photo of myself and include four or more close family or friends in small strips. This allowed me to showcase the people that have shaped me in a literal sense of making my portrait complete.
Opposed to selecting only four individuals, I selected six. My mother, father, brother, best friend, grandmother, and friend.
First, I chose my mother who is my absolute best friend. Strips of my mother can be seen under my eyes, horizontally, and to the left of my right eye, vertically. I chose these places because we look relatively similar to each other. My mother has been such a light in my life and her influence on my life has shaped me into the individual I am today.
Woven
Self Portrait
I incorporated my father, Justin Edwards, also; he can be seen horizontally through the eyebrows and vertically through the left eye on the left side. One thing I have always known I inherited from my father was his thick eyebrows. I was not always fond of having thick eyebrows and it can sometimes still be a blessing and a curse. Along with my mom, my father plays a very prominent role in my life and has always been a great supporter. He too has played many roles in shaping me into the person I am today.
My brother, Payton Edwards, can be seen horizontally by his smile. My brother has a beautiful smile which I think is a very prominent feature of his. I also choose his smile because he always seems to be smiling, he has a very funny personality. My brother has taught me a lot of lessons and set a lot of standards that I now hold for myself. Although we are still siblings and we argue, we can also be great friends to one another. Since we are siblings, I also incorporated a vertical strip on the right side which showcases his hair. One of the only ways that people recognize we are siblings is by our hair. Therefore, I thought this was crucial to include in my portrait.
Eden, my best friend, is shown near my right eye. I chose this spot because her eye squints are so prominent when she is truly smiling, although this is not a prominent position, her influence on me has been very internal. She has become so near and dear to my heart. Seeing her in her natural state when she is laughing and being fully herself brings me so much joy.
My nana, Susan, is such a special person to me. As I have grown older our relationship has strengthened and we are so close. I placed a horizontal strip at the bottom of my self-portrait which shows her jewelry. As my portrait became fuller, I decided to choose this because we do not share many features, however, we do share our love of jewelry. It can be seen as something small to viewers, but it makes me think about her when I see this portion of my portrait.
Last but certainly not least is Diana Knowles. Mrs. Knowles was my teacher in the 8th grade, but our friendship has continued to the present. After recognizing Mrs. Knowles as a teacher who impacted me greatly our friendship has only strengthened. I love to spend time with her and hear the wisdom she has to offer. For this very reason, I chose to incorporate her hair into my own. In the left side of my portrait a vertical strip was woven in. Her hair is grey which makes me think of wisdom. This lady has been so special to me and given me so much wisdom to carry with me. This is why I found it so important to incorporate her into this portrait.
