FACS 241: Architectural Drafting

This course teaches the fundamentals of technical drafting, lettering, line weights, terminology, symbols, and formatting of construction documents.

In this course we worked on several projects including simple exercises to learn the fundamentals of architectural drafting to a half-semester long project of the Palmer Home where we went through various steps in a renovation.

Demolition Plan

To begin the renovation project, we started with a demolition plan eliminating what the Palmer family wished to change in the home. This included new windows and interior doors, along with the kitchen and bathroom.

ADA Restroom

ADA restrooms have more requirements than a typical bathroom so in this assignment we were to design both a men's and a women's restroom. These were to include three toilet stalls, two sinks, and a baby changing station in the women's. The men's restroom was to include two urinals and a toilet all being ADA compliant. Of course we were to have a five foot turnaround and spaces specifically that are ADA compliant. An elevation was also drawn with tile and visuals of each of the stalls.

Doors & Windows

This drawing shows door and window schedules as they are an integral part of construction documents. We were asked to provide two doors and one double-hung window from a vendor. I also included dimensions and labels for each of the parts.

Kitchen Elevation

This drawing is a kitchen elevation which focused on using correct line weights and designing a kitchen within measurements provided.

Stair Section

In this drawing I drew a stair section which was to depict the stair structure accurately including labels and dimensions.

Window & Door Schedules

This drawing contains the multiple different doors and the windows that would be used within this project. Each door varying slightly depending on the use but keeping a consistent design throughout.

Sections & Details

In this drawing I showed the sections and details of the kitchen, and I loved creating the sections and details!  With how much detail went into each section, it really just shows how important the details really are.

Kitchen Elevation

The kitchen elevations were one of my favorite parts of this project, adding all the details and choosing tile, sink, and fixtures gave a more visual picture of the project. In a sense I felt it brought it to life.

Reflective Ceiling Plan

Then I created a reflective ceiling plan of the home to show where the lighting was expected to be installed and what lighting materials would be used in each of the rooms.

Floor Plan

After the demolition plan, I created a floor plan to show what the renovated home would look like. I included furniture to scale to better understand how the space would feel and how to best utilize the space while meeting the goals and hopes of the clients.
